Bethany Yellowtail was raised in southern Montana on the Crow Indian reservation. She is also a member of the Apsáalooke and Northern Cheyenne nations. She became interested in creating and the arts at a very young age. When Bethany's youth mentor observed these interests, she suggested that she explore them further and consider turning them into a career. So, after finishing high school- Bethany packed her belongings and moved to Los Angeles, CA to attend The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandise. Although she was nervous about leaving the Crow Indian Reservation for the big city of Los Angeles, Bethany flourished at FIDM. She became a member of Phi Theta Kappa, made her way to the President's List, and graduated Summa Cum Laude.
After graduation, Bethany collaborated with major brands such as the BCBGMAXAZRIA GROUP, One World Apparel and various private labels sold in notable retailers. Most recently, she held the position of a fulltime, independent contractor and consultant for brands. While assisting others with her expertise, Bethany also worked on her authentic Indigenous inspired line- B. Yellowtail. For many years, she was not able to dedicate her undivided attention to her designs. But despite this, Bethany managed to be featured in several national publications such as CNN, Indian Country Today Media Network, Apparel News, Women’s Wear Daily, and RUNWAY magazine. The positive feedback and genuine fascination from others pushed the young designer to leave her independent contracting duties behind and focus solely on her creations.
There have been so many moments in which Bethany has felt misunderstood or culturally misrepresented in the fashion industry and mainstream media. She decided that enough is enough. Her mission to not only dress people in beautiful pieces, but to also forge tribal identity in global fashion. She wishes to showcase the talent of contemporary Indigenous Native America and celebrate the strength & beauty of her heritage.
