When Gunner Foxx was growing up in Boyle Heights with his grandparents, he was interested in two things: playing music and getting into trouble. At the time, his grandfather was a master hatter and often sat Gunner down for lessons in hat making. Young Gunner wanted absolutely nothing to do with his grandfather's business and viewed these lessons as unwanted chores.
Years passed and Gunner decided to pursue his interest in music. During his time as a devoted guitar player, Foxx couldn't help but notice the abundance of poorly made hats his friends and acquaintances purchased. And of course, they couldn't help but notice what amazing hats he wore each day. It took him some time to admit to others that the craftsman behind his hats was either him or his grandfather. But as he got more comfortable with sharing this information, he began to realize that he quite enjoyed the art of hatmaking. Sure, the production process was tedious. But the imagination and creative elements that went into forming the perfect hat for a customer had Gunner hooked.
Like his grandfather, Foxx spent several years working for movie studios until he decided that having a boss wasn't for him. When the opportunity arose to have his own space at what is now Schaeffer's Garment Hotel in Hollywood, alongside someone who he felt was honest and trust worthy- Gunner went for it. And he couldn't be happier.
