At the awesome age of 9, there's really nothing Kumaka Jensen doesn't do. The young athlete swims, skis, surfs, participates in sled hockey, plays basketball, and last but not least- competes in Wheelchair Motocross (WCMX).
Kumaka was born with Spina Bifida, Bilateral Club Feet, and Hydrocephalus. Although these conditions would end up confining him to a wheelchair, Kumaka refuses to allow being in a chair confine him. With the help of professional surfer Christiaan Otter Bailey, Kumaka has been able to obtain a quality made wheelchair and join the world of extreme sports. He travels both nationally and internationally to shred skateparks with his friends. Some of his life experiences include (but are not limited to): surfing in Costa Rica, skating with Ryan Sheckler , and having the most supportive family anyone could ask for.
Kumaka has had over 20 surgeries in his lifetime and must take numerous pills to help his body get through the day. Even with all of this, he has managed to maintain a happy heart and keep a "rockin" attitude.
Upon meeting Liliana, the first thing that stands out is her vibrant spirit. She smiles big, laughs out loud and jokes around often. It's hard to imagine Liliana sitting at a hospital once a week, every week through six hour chemotherapy sessions. There are no traces of defeat on her face, just determination. Although it took her close to a year to admit that something wasn't quite right with her body, she has since then learned to embrace her journey and is using this time to get to know herself.
In this video, Liliana opens up about her battles with lung cancer and several of the surrounding circumstances. You'll be able to watch as she regains her independence, connects with loved ones, closes an old chapter in her life and opens a new one.
