YAZMIN MONET WATKINS
Internationally touring spoken word poet and actress, Yazmin Monet Watkins, is changing the world one word at a time. Yazmin began her journey into poetry while earning her degree in topics of American Studies, Film Studies and Women & Gender studies at Dickinson College. During this time, the young performer joined a group of spoken word artists and found herself jumping on top of lunch tables while shouting out rhymes in rhythms to passersby.
Yazmin became happily attached to the artistic form of communication and decided to explore ways of utilizing it to create positivity in modern day society. She quickly began to attract fans while putting on shows in various countries and at numerous universities. In doing so, she has opened up for some of the biggest names in the realms of both spoken word and activism. Some of these names include: Amiri Baraka, Sonia Sanchez, Les Nubians and Angela Davis. She was also recently featured on Russell Simmons' All Def Digital YouTube channel, performing "When She Smiles'".
Watkins is the author of a book of poems titled Love Without Limits: The Bi-Laws of Love. The collection of her work examines her experiences in love, sexuality, religion, heartache, and the eventual discovery of self-love. Separate issues concerning race, gender, sexual violence and identity can all be found in her poetry. Although her art originates from a more personal point of view, Yazmin hopes that it will touch the world and help to empower others.
